Call for Poster Presentation

Call for 2nd-Annual Poster Presentations FENI Educators Summit 2009

Poster Presentations:
We are pleased to invite culinary educators and administrators at secondary and postsecondary programs to share teaching improvements that have led to better student learning via our 2nd Annual Poster Presentations at the 2009 FENI Educators Summit on Saturday, February 14th, 2008 (www.feni.org). We are inviting posters that share teaching improvements in any aspect of culinary education: the curriculum, administration, classroom, kitchen, culinary field trips, etc.

Congratulations to last year's inaugural winners: Jean L. Hertzman, Ph.D., CCE, from the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and Carol Ann Silkes, Ph.D., CEC, from the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Purdue University. Congrats also to the People's Choice Award winner for 2008, Vivian C. Cadbury from The Culinary Institute of America.

Submission Guidelines:
Follow the guidelines below if interested in submitting a proposal for a poster presentation at the FENI Educators Summit in 2009:

  • All proposals must be submitted via an e-mail attachment to Naurice Olivera by midnight on December 1st, 2008. The subject message of the e-mail should read: FENI POSTER PRESENTATION.
  • Each proposal must have a cover page with the title of the proposed poster presentation, the name of the presenter(s), name of culinary program, mailing address, phone number(s) (office and/or cell), and e-mail address.
  • An abstract of the proposed poster should be attached to the cover page that has the title of the presentation and explanation of the improved teaching technique that has been used successfully to better facilitate student learning. The abstract should be no more than 600 words.
  • To be adequately reviewed, the abstract should have background information that led to the improvement, any published books or articles or expert sources that were consulted to help shape the teaching innovation, and evidence to support the claim that the improvement led to better student learning.
  • The abstracts of accepted presentations will be placed on the FENI Web site following the conclusion of the 2009 FENI Summit and available for review until the 2010 Summit.
  • All poster presenters must register and pay the registration fee to attend the FENI.
  • All poster presenters will be notified via e-mail and phone on or before December 15, 2008, regarding the acceptance or decline of their presentations.

Review Criteria:
Poster submissions will be reviewed by at least two individuals in a double-blind process. The primary criteria will be the significance of the improvement, the quality of the theoretical or conceptual framework upon which it was based, and evidence that the method led to better student learning. Only the abstracts will be reviewed and scored. A select number of accepted posters will be distinguished with a Best Poster Award by the review panel. A select number of posters will win an Educator's Choice Award based on the votes of those attending the presentations on Saturday, February 14th, 2009.

Poster Presentation Format:
The following procedures apply to those poster presentations that have been accepted for presentation on Monday, February 16:

  • All presenters will set up their posters between 4 pm and 5 pm on February 16.
  • Each presenter will be provided with a table and standard tri-fold poster board to attach posters using the tape and push pins that will be made available. Presenters are also free to affix their poster presentation to a standard tri-fold poster board prior to the conference and bring it with them to set up for the presentation.
  • Each presenter is required to bring copies of the abstract or poster for those who may wish to take away information presented in the poster.
  • The material should be presented in a logical, informative, concise and visually attractive manner with informative charts, graphs, photos or other visual aids.
  • The text on the poster should use large-enough typeface so that it can be easily read from up to 3 feet away.
  • Have a notepad handy when presenting the poster to take names and addresses of people interested in your poster, etc.
  • Business cards or other contact information are suggested.
